Description
In this session, we will explore grants that go beyond traditional façade or sign grants. Using Kennesaw's recent Main Street on the Move Flex grant as a guide, participants will learn about grant objectives, developing a scoring matrix, and success stories from the inaugural grant awards. We will also explore funding options for ongoing implementation of the program, as well as positive impacts to the City's bottom line through increased personal property tax values.

See how the city of Stockbridge created an extended promotional campaign supported by the Small Business Blitz app to engage citizens with local businesses and how the city of Dallas created an event in the month of February using limited city resources that lead to record sales days for many downtown businesses.

In a survey conducted this spring by DCA's Office of Downtown Development, small business support was identified as one of the top training priorities for affiliate and accredited designated Main Street programs. But to know how we can best support our businesses, we must first understand what makes them tick. While every business is unique, particular elements can help or harm each industry. As Main Street managers, we need to understand the differences that impact each of these industries to develop better tools to support them. In this session, the Georgia Main Street Program will host a panel of small business practitioners representing 4 of the critical downtown industries: restaurants, retail, services, and office professionals. In this facilitated Q&A session, panelists will give us a glimpse of what makes these businesses work. Extra attention will be made to emphasize what staff can do to support their needs and the unintentional mistakes they can make, which can negatively impact business.

Each month, Main Street cities report their statistics to DCA using the monthly reports. The information you send to DCA may seem like just busy work, but it is actually a valuable tool for your community. In this session we will explore: 1. Who/where to get the information from plus what additional information you might want to collect. 2. Now that you've submitted your report, how should you keep it for easy access? 3. What can you do with the information you've saved? 4. Why this information should be kept, even if you're not a Main Street organization.
